How the Word Unscrambler Works
Enter Your Scrambled Letters
Type the letters you want to unscramble into the main input box. The tool accepts up to 15 letters. It finds every valid English word that can be formed using some or all of those letters — each letter can only be used as many times as it appears in your input.
Apply Filters for Precision
Use the optional filters to narrow results. "Starts with" shows only words beginning with specific letters. "Ends with" filters by ending. "Contains" requires a letter sequence anywhere in the word. "Length" restricts results to a specific word size. These filters are especially helpful when you have a partial answer from a crossword or word game board.
Sort by Score or Alphabetically
Results show Scrabble point values for each word. By default, words are sorted by score within each length group — highest-scoring words appear first. Switch to A-Z sorting if you prefer alphabetical order. Longer words are grouped at the top since they generally score more points.
Unscrambling Tips and Tricks
Look for Common Letter Pairs
English has predictable letter combinations that appear in thousands of words. Train your eye to spot these pairs in scrambled letters, and words start to materialize:
TH — the most common pair in English (THE, THAT, THINK, THOSE)
SH — SHARE, SHELL, SHIFT, SHOW
CH — CHAIR, CHECK, CHILD, CHOOSE
QU — Q is almost always followed by U (QUEEN, QUICK, QUIET)
CK — BACK, CHECK, BLOCK, STICK
PH — PHONE, PHOTO, PHRASE
WH — WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHILE
Identify Prefixes and Suffixes
If your scrambled letters contain U and N, try grouping them as the prefix UN-. If you see I, N, G, try the suffix -ING. Common prefixes include UN-, RE-, PRE-, DIS-, MIS-, and OVER-. Common suffixes include -ING, -TION, -NESS, -MENT, -ABLE, -IBLE, -ED, -ER, -LY, and -FUL. Recognizing these chunks lets you treat multi-letter groups as single units, dramatically reducing the complexity.
Separate Vowels and Consonants First
Write the vowels in one group and consonants in another. Most English words alternate between consonants and vowels. If you have the letters D, G, R, A, E, N, separate them: vowels A, E and consonants D, G, R, N. Then try building C-V-C patterns: DAN, RAN, GEN, DEN. Extend to longer words: RANGE, ANGER, GRADE, DANGER, GARDEN.
Try Word Endings First
Many words share common endings. If your letters include E and D, try -ED endings. If they include S, try plural forms. Working backward from the ending gives your brain a different angle on the same set of letters and often reveals words you missed when reading left to right.

Scrabble Tips
In Scrabble, high-scoring letters placed on premium squares create massive point swings. Our unscrambler shows Scrabble scores for every result so you can quickly identify your best play. Key Scrabble scoring facts:
Points
Letters
1 point
A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U
2 points
D, G
3 points
B, C, M, P
4 points
F, H, V, W, Y
5 points
K
8 points
J, X

Q, Z
Words using J, X, Q, or Z score disproportionately high. Look for short words like JO, QI, XI, ZA, and AX — they score well and fit tight board positions.
Words With Friends
Words With Friends uses slightly different letter values (for example, J is worth 10 in WWF vs 8 in Scrabble). The valid word list also differs. However, the core strategy is the same: maximize points by placing high-value letters on premium tiles. Our unscrambler scores use standard Scrabble values as a close approximation.
Daily Jumble Puzzle
The newspaper Jumble gives you 4-6 scrambled words to unscramble. Each answer is a single word. Enter the scrambled letters and filter to the exact word length shown in the Jumble grid. The correct answer will be among the results.
Text Twist and Boggle
In Text Twist, you need to find words of various lengths from a fixed set of letters — exactly what our unscrambler does. Enter all available letters and the tool shows every valid word from 3 letters up to the full set. For Boggle, the constraint is adjacency on the grid, but our tool helps verify whether a word you spot is actually valid.
Letter Frequency in English
Most Common Letters
Knowing which letters appear most frequently in English helps you prioritize when unscrambling. The top 10 letters by frequency are:
E — appears in approximately 12.7% of all English text
T — 9.1% frequency
A — 8.2% frequency
O — 7.5% frequency
I — 7.0% frequency
N — 6.7% frequency
S — 6.3% frequency
H — 6.1% frequency
R — 6.0% frequency
D — 4.3% frequency
If your scrambled letters contain mostly letters from this top-10 list, expect many valid words. If they contain rare letters like Q, X, Z, or J, fewer words are possible — but those words tend to score higher in Scrabble.
Rare Letters and Their Patterns
Q almost always pairs with U (QU-). X commonly appears at the end of words (BOX, FOX, MIX) or before vowels (EXAM, EXIT). Z appears in common words like ZERO, ZONE, QUIZ, and FIZZ. J starts words (JUMP, JOKE, JOIN) but rarely appears elsewhere. Knowing these patterns helps you spot words containing rare letters faster.
About This Word Unscrambler
Our word unscrambler was built for word game players who need fast, accurate results. It searches a database of over 19,000 common English words — curated to include everyday vocabulary and popular game words while excluding obscure technical jargon. Every result includes a Scrabble point value so you can immediately identify the highest-scoring plays.
The tool runs entirely in your browser with no server calls. Your letters and results stay completely private. It works on any device — desktop, tablet, or phone — with no downloads required. Whether you are playing Scrabble against a friend, solving the daily Jumble over coffee, or stuck on a crossword clue, this unscrambler gives you every possible word from your available letters in under a second. Frequently Asked Questions
Our word unscrambler searches over 19,000 words and shows Scrabble scores for every result. It includes filters for starting letters, ending letters, and word length. Unlike many unscramblers, it runs entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server, and results are instant.
It depends on which letters you have. A set of 7 common letters (like A, E, R, S, T, L, N) can yield 100+ valid words of various lengths. A set with rare letters (Q, X, Z) might yield only 10-20. Enter your specific letters into our unscrambler to get the exact count.
In competitive settings like tournament Scrabble, electronic aids are not permitted during play. For casual home games, learning, or newspaper puzzles, unscramblers are widely used and accepted. Many players use them after a game to discover words they missed and build their vocabulary for next time.
An anagram uses all the original letters exactly once to form a new word (LISTEN → SILENT). Unscrambling finds words using any subset of the available letters. Our Anagram Solver handles both, but this Word Unscrambler is specifically optimized for finding all possible words from a letter set, with game-oriented features like Scrabble scoring and filters.
Practice daily with word games like Scrabble, Jumble, or our Daily Crypticle. Study common letter pairs (TH, SH, CH, QU). Learn prefixes and suffixes. After using the unscrambler, review which words you missed and note the patterns. Over time, you will spot words faster without needing the tool.
Our current version does not support wildcard/blank tile characters. Enter only the known letters you have. For Scrabble blanks, try running the unscrambler multiple times with different letters substituted for the blank to find the highest-scoring option.
