About the Wordle Answer Archive
Wordle launched publicly in October 2021 and has published one new puzzle every day since then — over 1,700 puzzles and counting. Every answer is a common 5-letter English word. No proper nouns, no obscure jargon, and no offensive terms. The puzzle editor, Tracy Bennett, curates the word list to ensure each answer is fair, recognizable, and solvable.
Our archive aims to document every Wordle answer alongside its puzzle number, date, and difficulty characteristics. We track letter patterns, double-letter frequency, starting letter distribution, and other statistics to help you understand trends in Wordle's word selection. This data also powers our Wordle Solver and Best Starting Words analysis.
Wordle Answer Statistics
Most Common Starting Letters
Based on analysis of all Wordle answers to date, the most frequent starting letters are:
- S — approximately 15% of all answers start with S (STARE, STONE, SOBER, SWEAR...)
- C — about 8% (CRANE, CRISP, CHUNK, CLAIM...)
- B — about 7% (BRAIN, BRAVE, BLEND, BURST...)
- T — about 6% (TRACE, TREAT, THINK, TOWER...)
- P — about 6% (PRIDE, PLAIN, POINT, PASTE...)
Starting with an S-word as your opener tests the most common first letter while also checking S in other positions. This is one reason SLATE and SALET rank so highly as starting words.
Most Common Ending Letters
The ending letter is even more concentrated than the starting letter:
- E — roughly 18% of answers end in E (CRANE, STARE, TRACE, PLACE...)
- Y — about 12% (HAPPY, FULLY, DAILY, ANGRY...)
- T — about 8% (GRANT, FEAST, HEART, MOUNT...)
- R — about 7% (STEER, CLEAR, SOLAR, WATER...)
- D — about 6% (SOUND, FRIED, GRIND, BUILD...)
Nearly one in five answers ends with E. If you have eliminated most possibilities and are stuck, try words ending in E first.
Hardest Wordle Answers
Some Wordle answers cause significantly higher failure rates than average. The hardest puzzles typically share one or more of these characteristics:
- Double letters: Words like JAZZY, VIVID, and ABBEY have repeated letters that players often overlook
- Uncommon letter combinations: PARER, FOYER, and CAULK use less common patterns
- Multiple valid options: When several words fit the same green/yellow pattern (e.g., _ATCH could be WATCH, MATCH, CATCH, BATCH, PATCH, HATCH, LATCH)
Words with Repeated Letters
About 20% of Wordle answers contain at least one repeated letter. The most commonly doubled letters in Wordle answers are L (SKILL, SHALL), S (GRASS, BLISS), E (CREEP, GEESE), and O (BLOOD, PROOF). If you are stuck after four guesses with no clear path, consider whether a double letter might be the answer. Our Wordle Solver handles double letters correctly in its filtering.
