Every successful cryptic crossword solver follows a similar systematic approach. Here's the proven 7-step method used by experts worldwide:
Don't try to solve immediately. Read the entire clue to get the overall sense and rhythm. Notice the number in brackets – this tells you the length of the answer.
The definition is always at the beginning OR end of the clue, never in the middle. Look for the most straightforward part that could define a word.
Look for words that signal the type of wordplay: anagram indicators (mixed, broken), hidden word indicators (in, within), reversal indicators (back, returns), etc.
Once you've identified the definition and indicator words, separate the clue into its two main parts: definition + wordplay.
Focus on the wordplay portion. Apply the technique indicated (anagram, hidden word, etc.) to find a word that matches the required length.
Check that your wordplay answer also fits the definition. In cryptic crosswords, both the definition and wordplay must lead to the same answer.
If you have crossing letters from other solved clues, ensure your answer fits perfectly with the intersecting words.
